SCENE #21: CONTINUED: (4)

REID
Yeah. Really.
(then, laughs a little)
You’re funny.

AMY
Not on purpose.

He moves in a little closer. Amy stops breathing.

REID
Would you mind if I . . . ?

Kissed you? Amy nods - - “uh-huh. Yes, please.” And so he does. Lightly, but right on the money. And then, his cell phone RINGS. He checks it.

REID (CONT’D)
Shoot, that’s my lab partner. I gotta go.
(then)
No more candy corn for you, okay?

Amy nods, too dazed to answer back. Reid leaves and we stay with the stunned Amy. It’s about time she got kissed.

SCENE #22: INT. ECC PIANO PRACTICE ROOM. DAY. (D5)

Ephram’s still in his camping clothes, mesmerized as Kyle plays brilliantly. There’s a KNOCK, but they don’t hear it. Then another, as the door opens. It’s TRACY HUNTER. (Kyle’s mom, mid-30’s.)

KYLE
Mom. I still have ten minutes.

TRACY
I know, but we gotta go. Uncle Clark’s making burgers, and I have the buns. Hi, Ephram.

EPHRAM
Hey. The kid’s on fire today.

KYLE
See? Five minutes.

TRACY
Sorry, Charlie.

KYLE
Fine. I gotta use the bathroom, then we’ll go get some mad cow disease . . .

Ephram smiles, which makes Kyle kinda smile. Nice that someone gets his dark humor. As he walks off, Ephram turns to Tracy:

EPHRAM
He’s in a good mood today. He must’ve had a fun weekend, huh?

TRACY
His weekends are all pretty much the same. He doesn’t have any friends, really. Not a lot of interests. Tell you the truth, he doesn’t do much more than play piano by himself. Is that normal?

EPHRAM
I’m not sure, but you just described my childhood, so . . .

She smiles, somehow that’s comforting.

TRACY
You know, I don’t know squat about music, and I don’t know what you guys talk about in here, but whatever you’re doing, it’s working. He looks forward to these lessons a lot.

EPHRAM
Really? Man, if this is what he looks forward to, I’d hate to see how he acts around stuff he dreads.

TRACY
Don’t I know it.
(then)
Ah, but he’s had a tough week, poor kid. His birthday came and went, and his dad never even called. Not that I expected him to, but. . .

EPHRAM
I’m sorry. I had no idea.

Andy was right. There’s usually a reason.

EPHRAM (CONT’D)
Where is his dad?

TRACY
Damned if I know. He left me for a diner hostess in Boulder when Kyle was ten. Haven’t heard much from him since.

Ephram takes that in - - explains a lot. As he processes:

TRACY (CONT’D)
Anyway, point is, I know my kid can be a handful sometimes. And I feel bad about not being able to pay you, so for whatever reason you’re doing this, thanks. I swear, when you called earlier, you just made his day.

Ephram can’t help but smile at that, nice to be needed by someone. Just then, Kyle reappears.

KYLE
Everything’s locked. We’re gonna have to stop somewhere.

EPHRAM
Good job today. Do me a favor, work on that concerto for tomorrow.

KYLE
Do me a favor. Take a shower next time, because you kinda stink.

Off Ephram, smiling at Tracy, as she ushers the kid out . . .

SCENE #23: INT. SAM’S. DAY. (D5)

ON ANDY, freshly showered, as he works his way down the order line. NINA behind him, cleaning up a bit. . .

NINA
So how was camping? Delia bet me ten bucks you’d come home yesterday. Guess I suckered her right outta that cash.

DOCTOR BROWN
Teaching my daughter how to gamble? I’m so glad I leave her in your care.

NINA
Please. I already introduced her to porn and vibrators. Gambling’s the least of your worries.
(then)
So, tell me about the weekend. Was it everything you hoped it would be?

Andy takes a moment to consider.

DOCTOR BROWN
And then some.
