ACT FOUR
FADE IN:
SCENE #24: INT. COLORADO A & M HOSPITAL. OPERATING ROOM. DAY. (D6)
Dr. Andy Brown is gowned and ready to perform miracles. Other HOSPITAL WORKERS are there, making sure everything is plugged in and working. Whether we can see it clearly or not, Max Berick lies on the table, prepped for brain surgery.
NURSE
Dr. Brown, is there any music you’d like me to put on?
DOCTOR BROWN
Thanks, but we’re not having music today.
Another nurse brings in a scrubbed-in woman. It’s Betty.
DOCTOR BROWN (CONT’D)
Right over here, Betty.
She’s escorted to a chair next to the operating table, right next to her husband. She takes a moment to regard Max on the table. It’s clearly painful for her, which Andy notices.
DOCTOR BROWN (CONT’D)
You know you can always stop if it gets too hard.
BETTY
I hope that’s not your attitude.
Andy smiles.
DOCTOR BROWN
Okay then. We should start.
BETTY
How long does this usually take?
DOCTOR BROWN
About eight hours, give or take.
BETTY
I guess I’ll start at the beginning then.
Everyone takes their places as Andy starts the surgery. Betty takes Max’s hand. She looks to her husband and begins to tell him the story of his life. The story of their lives together.
BETTY (CONT’D)
The very first time I ever saw you was a Friday afternoon. You were eight years old, so I was just about to turn six. You were playing in your front yard as I was on my way home. Your mother was calling you to come in for dinner. She had on that blue dress she always wore on the Sabbath. She looked beautiful . . .
As Andy focuses on surgery, and Betty focuses on her story . . .
SCENE #25: INT. COFFEE SHOP. DAY. (D6)
Ephram sits at a table, checks his watch, and when he looks up, Kyle is walking in. Kyle comes over, sits down.
EPHRAM
Thanks for meeting me.
KYLE
Yeah, well, I don’t have a lot of time.
EPHRAM
Okay. Do you want some coffee or something?
KYLE
I’m fourteen. I don’t even like coffee ice cream.
EPHRAM
Right. Good point. Well said.
Ephram exhales, preparing to jump in. Kyle’s wary.
KYLE
You’re not gonna freak out on me again, are you? Because you should know, my mom is right around the corner.
EPHRAM
Actually, I wanted to apologize for that whole freak out thing. It’s just, it’s kind of hard to explain, but I have a strange relationship with the piano. It’s not like I can just sit down and play whenever I want. It’s kind of more intense than that, and I wasn’t in the right place to do it, so –
