SCENE #8: CONTINUED: (2)

BRIGHT
Good. Because Artsy Ephram was a serious buzz kill. No offense.

REID
(finishing push-ups)
Eighteen. . . Nineteen. . . Twenty.

As he gets up, Reid realizes they’re looking at him.

REID (CONT’D)
You guys wanna do the next set with me?

On Ephram and Bright; maybe some other time . . .

SCENE #9: INT. BROWN & ABBOTT MEDICAL. ANDY’S OFFICE. DAY. (D2)

Andy sits on the edge of his desk, across from MAX and BETTY BERICK. These two are in their 70’s, been married for 50, and have more energy than people half their age.

BETTY
It’s bad, isn’t it? I can tell by your face that it’s bad. Just say it fast.

DOCTOR BROWN
Max’s test results came back, and we found a mass.

BETTY
Oh my God . . .

MAX
It’s okay, Betty. Calm down.

DOCTOR BROWN
A dime-size tumor located at the base of the brain stem. That’s what’s been causing the headaches and dizziness.

BETTY
I can’t believe this is happening. . .

MAX
I told you I wasn’t making it up.

BETTY
This isn’t the time for an “I told you so.” You see what I live with?

DOCTOR BROWN
There is some good news here. The tumor is benign, and in a very accessible position. It also has distinct borders, and Max is in great physical shape.

MAX
Meaning?

DOCTOR BROWN
Meaning it should be fairly easy to remove the entire mass, and if all goes well, you could live another twenty years. I can do the surgery myself if you’d like.

BETTY
But isn’t it dangerous for someone Max’s age to have brain surgery?

MAX
You heard the man. I’m in great shape.

DOCTOR BROWN
(smiles, then)
I like the attitude, Max. But your wife is right, there are a few things we should discuss first. As with any surgery there are some risks, side effects...

MAX
I know, I know. I could die on the table. That's what they said when they yanked out my prostate.

DOCTOR BROWN
That's one risk. Also, any time you deal with brain surgery, [a couple of unreadable words] because of where I'd be poking around. Hearing loss is a possibility. Memory loss is an occasional side effect.

Max looks at Betty; something has struck a nerve. Andy continues on as they have an unspoken conversation.

DOCTOR BROWN (CONT’D)
Also, for a short time after surgery, symptoms may be worse than they were before. I'm not sure if you're familiar with the Sundown Syndrome--

But the Bericks stopped listening awhile ago. Andy notices:

DOCTOR BROWN (CONT’D)
Mr. And Mrs. Berick?

BETTY
(to Max)
Will you at least let him finish?

MAX
I don’t need to let him finish.

BETTY
You’re being ridiculous.

MAX
It's my decision.

DOCTOR BROWN
Um . . . you guys want to fill me in here?

Max gets up.

MAX
I’m sorry, Dr. Brown, but I don’t think we’ll be needing your services after all.

And Max walks out the door. Betty looks at Andy, a little embarrassed at what just transpired.

BETTY
I’ll talk to him. We’ll call you, okay?

And Betty leaves, leaving a very confused Andy.

SCENE #10: INT. FEENEY HOUSE. KITCHEN. NIGHT. (N2)

Check it out. NINA FEENEY should be on the Food Network. She’s got dinner going on the stove, in the oven, and a salad off to the side. SAM sits at the table, doing homework as JAKE enters the kitchen.

JAKE
Hello, happy family.

NINA
Hey, babe.
SAM
Hi, Jake.

Jake walks by Sam, gives him a little tickle under the armpits, which makes Sam GIGGLE happily. As Jake walks over to Nina, he INHALES deeply. Nina looks at him, smiles.

NINA
I know, it smells great. That’s very sweet of you.
