SCENE #17: CONTINUED: (2)
AMY
And don’t tell me I’m in the prime of my life because I will hurl the remote control at you.
She stands, grabs her coat.
DOCTOR ABBOTT
Where are you going?
AMY
Out.
And she’s gone. Off Abbott, confused and alone. Again. Welcome to the new normal. . .
SCENE #18: EXT. COLLEGE PARTY. NIGHT. (N3)
The music’s LOUD and the party’s peaking. People are dancing, hooking up, etc. But the bandstand, we find Bright and Hannah in a circle of drunken kids, playing Thumper.
BRIGHT
. . . Why do we play?!
EVERYBODY (PETE)
To get messed up!
Bright is in his element - - goofy, carefree, the ringmaster of the party. The group “passes” their signs around until it reaches a distracted Hannah. She messes up. Again.
EVERYBODY (CONT’D) (PETE)
Chug! Chug! Chug!
Hannah smiles weakly, swigs from her red plastic glass.
PETE BORONI
You must be crazy wasted by now.
HANNAH
Actually, I’m drinking soda.
Ephram shows up.
EPHRAM
You too, huh?
(shrugs, explaining)
Wasn’t feeling the whole fear and loathing thing.
He and Hannah trade a look. They’re the last sober people standing. Bright comes over, man-paws Ephram.
BRIGHT
There you are, little buddy. We’re playing Thumper. Want in?
EPHRAM
So you’re where all the beer went.
LEAD SINGER (O.S.)
Goodnight, Bumstead, see you next time.
The music stops. The crowd murmurs. Boroni joins Bright, a little panicked.
PETE BORONI
Man, this sucks. We’ve got four more kegs coming and the band’s done.
BRIGHT
No worries, dude. I got this.
HANNAH
Where are you going?
BRIGHT
Be right back . . .
He bolts up to the stage. As Bright murmurs with the band’s LEAD SINGER, Ephram approaches Hannah:
EPHRAM
You okay?
HANNAH
(covering)
Oh yeah. I’m just tired. I didn’t know parties lasted so long.
The Singer hands Bright the mic, happy to bail. He jumps on stage, instantly acquires the poses of a gangsta MC.
EPHRAM
That can’t be good. . .
Hannah panics a little, lowers her eyes.
HANNAH
What’s he doing?
EPHRAM
It’s okay. He hasn’t taken off any clothes. Yet.
She peeks, still scared as Bright addresses the crowd.
