SCENE #15: CONTINUED: (2)
NINA
You can’t be serious.
Now Andy has two angry women in his office. He backtracks:
DOCTOR BROWN
I didn’t say it was Jake.
NINA
There are only three doctors in town, Andy. Do the math.
DOCTOR BROWN
Well someone gave it to him and it wasn’t me or Harold - -
But before he can finish the thought, Nina walks out.
DOCTOR BROWN (CONT’D)
Nina . . .
Andy wants to go after her, but Ethan’s mom is sitting in his chair, dazed, tears in her eyes.
MARY HARCOURT
I don’t understand how this happened. He’s been acting so happy lately. I was so relieved. It felt like we had finally turned a corner, and now I come to find that it wasn’t real at all.
(then)
Why would he lie to me?
DOCTOR BROWN
I don’t know. Sometimes it just seems easier to pretend.
MARY HARCOURT
For the moment. But it always catches up to you, doesn’t it? Why can’t teenagers understand that?
Off Andy, wondering why he can’t seem to understand that either . . .
SCENE #16: EXT. COLLEGE PARTY. NIGHT. (N3)
Bright, Hannah and Ephram enter your basic college kegger in the backyard of a rundown house. COLLEGE KIDS groove to the beat of the BAND playing on a makeshift stage. Bright scans the crowd, has a bodyguard’s awareness of Hannah.
EPHRAM
Anybody see the keg?
BRIGHT
Dude. You hate beer.
EPHRAM
When in Rome, right? Want one?
BRIGHT
(yes, but)
I’m good. Thanks.
HANNAH
You sure? I can drive, remember?
BRIGHT
Maybe later.
Ephram walks away. Hannah and Bright listen to the music for a beat. It’s sweet. It’s also impossible to have a normal conversation over the loud music.
HANNAH
So this is it? We’re partying?
BRIGHT
Yup. We just hang and talk to people and stuff. Are you having fun?
HANNAH
Yeah. I’m great.
BRIGHT
Great. But if you get freaked out, just say the word. We’re out of here.
HANNAH
I will. Thanks.
PETE BORONI (O.S.)
Yo, Abbott! What up, dog?
Bright turns to see PETE BORONI, 19. He and Bright exchange some appropriately hip handshake/chest bump as Hannah watches, shy.
BRIGHT
Pete. This is my girlfriend Hannah.
Bright drapes his arm around Hannah, who positively glows. This is the first time he’s called her that in public.
HANNAH
Hi.
PETE BORONI
You gotta check out my room, dude. I’ve got a flatscreen and the new Grand Theft Auto. We’re gonna play for Jaeger shots.
BRIGHT
Sounds cool, but I think we’re gonna chill on the band for a while . . .
Hannah can see how much he wants to go. She’s happy, doesn’t want to be an albatross.
HANNAH
You go.
BRIGHT
Really?
HANNAH
Yeah. I have to find the bathroom anyway. I’ll meet you inside.
And she means it. Bright looks at Hannah like SHE is a Jaeger shot - - utter perfection. He kisses her, then walks off with Boroni. We stay with Hannah, drunk on Bright . . .
SCENE #17: INT. ABBOTT HOUSE. TV ROOM. NIGHT.
Abbott comes home, pleasantly surprised to find Amy, on the couch, watching TV. As he removes his coat:
DOCTOR ABBOTT
What are you doing home?
AMY
What’s it look like?
DOCTOR ABBOTT
It’s Saturday night. I assumed there would be some college mixer to attend.
AMY
There is. Bright’s going, and he took my ex-boyfriend and my best friend with him. But thanks for asking. Oh, and when you say “mixer,” you sound, like, ninety.
Abbott senses a teenage mood, but he’s also happy for rare time with Amy. He steps to the family video library.
