ACT THREE

FADE IN:

SCENE #15: INT. BROWN & ABBOTT MEDICAL. ANDY’S OFFICE. DAY. (D3)

Andy stands at his bookshelf, consulting a thick research book, when Nina appears in the doorway.

NINA
You busy?

Andy smiles - - a real one this time.

DOCTOR BROWN
Just doing some research. I’m making tonight’s pasta from scratch, so do you prefer linguini or cappellini?

NINA
Listen, about dinner . . . We can’t make it after all. Jake feels like road kill. I think he might be getting a flu…..

A moment as Andy considers this. It could be true.

DOCTOR BROWN
Oh? I’m sorry to hear that.

NINA: Yeah. He woke up yesterday with a really high fever. It’s not pretty.

Now Andy knows she’s lying. But instead of calling her on it, he simply says:

DOCTOR BROWN
Try feeding him garlic. It boosts the immune system.

NINA
Thanks. I’ll do that.
(then)
So, maybe another time . . .

They trade smiles, both knowing it won’t happen. His heart breaks a little, like he’s lost her all over again.

DOCTOR BROWN
Look, Nina - -

But he’s interrupted by a grief-stricken woman, MARY HARCOURT, 50’s. She’s beside herself at the moment . . .

MARY HARCOURT
Are you Doctor Brown?

DOCTOR BROWN
Yes - - ?

MARY HARCOURT
What on God’s green earth is the matter with you?

DOCTOR BROWN
I’m sorry? Who are you?

MARY HARCOURT
You gave my son Viagra. Without even so much as a phone call to his parents? What kind of doctor are you?

Andy’s surprised, but recovers quickly.

DOCTOR BROWN
You must be Ethan’s mother.

MARY HARCOURT
So it’s true!

DOCTOR BROWN
No. I mean, yes, Ethan came to me and asked for a prescription. But I didn’t give him one.

MARY HARCOURT
Oh really? Then why is he in the cardiac unit right now?

NINA
Oh my God. . .

MARY HARCOURT
He woke up this morning with chest pains. My husband took him to County, and now they’re keeping overnight for observation. How do you explain that?

DOCTOR BROWN
I can’t. But I can assure you I did not write that prescription. And I’m certain my partner didn’t either. Perhaps he went to another doctor in town. . .

Which, Nina realizes, could only be Jake. Defenses up:

NINA
You can’t be serious.

Now Andy has two angry women in his office. He backtracks:

DOCTOR BROWN
I didn’t say it was Jake.

NINA
There are only three doctors in town, Andy. Do the math.

DOCTOR BROWN
Well someone gave it to him and it wasn’t me or Harold - -

But before he can finish the thought, Nina walks out.

DOCTOR BROWN (CONT’D)
Nina . . .

Andy wants to go after her, but Ethan’s mom is sitting in his chair, dazed, tears in her eyes.

MARY HARCOURT
I don’t understand how this happened. He’s been acting so happy lately. I was so relieved. It felt like we had finally turned a corner, and now I come to find that it wasn’t real at all.
(then)
Why would he lie to me?

DOCTOR BROWN
I don’t know. Sometimes it just seems easier to pretend.

MARY HARCOURT
For the moment. But it always catches up to you, doesn’t it? Why can’t teenagers understand that?

Off Andy, wondering why he can’t seem to understand that either . . .

SCENE #16: EXT. COLLEGE PARTY. NIGHT. (N3)

Bright, Hannah and Ephram enter your basic college kegger in the backyard of a rundown house. COLLEGE KIDS groove to the beat of the BAND playing on a makeshift stage. Bright scans the crowd, has a bodyguard’s awareness of Hannah.
